Prescription Drug Coverage

Medications are one of the biggest ongoing health costs. Medicare Part D helps cover them. Plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Two Ways to Get Drug Coverage

Stand-alone Part D plan: Added to Original Medicare, often alongside a Medicare Supplement plan

Medicare Advantage with drug coverage: Many Medicare Advantage plans include Part D in the same plan.

What to Look At When Comparing

01

Formulary:

The list of drugs the plan covers. Plans change their lists each year.

02

Tiers:

Drugs are grouped into tiers, and your cost depends on the tier.

03

Pharmacy network:

Some pharmacies cost less than others under a given plan.

04

Monthly premium and deductible:

Check both, along with what you pay at the counter.

05

Restrictions:

Some drugs need prior authorization or have quantity limits.

Why Review Every Year

Plans can change their costs, covered drugs and pharmacies every year, and your own medications may change too. Reviewing during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7) helps you avoid surprises.

04

Avoid the Late Enrollment Penalty

If you go without drug coverage that is at least as good as Medicare's for 63 days or more after you first qualify, you may pay a penalty added to your premium for as long as you have Part D. We can help you check.

Bring Your Medication List

We will compare plans against your actual prescriptions and pharmacy.
