Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is another way to receive your Medicare benefits. Private insurance companies approved by Medicare offer these plans. They include the same hospital and medical coverage as Original Medicare, and many add more.

01

What Medicare Advantage May Include

Medicare is health coverage from the federal government. Most people become eligible at 65, and some people qualify sooner because of a disability. Medicare is made up of four parts:

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)

You generally use doctors and hospitals within the plan's network and may need a referral to see a specialist. Costs are often lower

PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)

You can see doctors in or out of network, though out-of-network care usually costs more. There is typically more flexibility.

Special Needs Plans (SNP)

Designed for people with specific situations, such as certain chronic conditions or those who qualify for both Medicare and Medi-Cal.

Things to Consider

01

Networks: Are your doctors and hospitals in the plan?

02

Prescriptions: Are your medications on the plan's formulary, and what will they cost?

03

Total cost: Look beyond the monthly premium to copayments, deductibles and the out-of-pocket maximum.

04

Extras: Which added benefits will you really use?
