Medicare Supplement Plans

Original Medicare covers a lot, but not everything. You may still owe deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. A Medicare Supplement plan, also called Medigap, is sold by private insurance companies to help pay some of those costs.

How It Works

You keep Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and pay your Part B premium. You also pay a separate monthly premium for your Medigap plan. When you get care, Medicare pays its share first, and your Medigap plan pays some or all of what is left, depending on the plan you choose.

Standardized plans

Medigap plans are labeled with letters. Benefits for each lettered plan are the same no matter which company sells it. Prices can differ.

No drug coverage

Medigap does not include prescription drugs. Most people add a separate Part D plan.

Best time to buy

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During this window you have guaranteed access to coverage. After it ends, you may face health questions and could be declined or charged more.
